Lagaan is a movie that needs no introduction to any of the Indian who reads this article. It is the third Hindi language movie to be nominated for Academy award for best foreign language film. Released in 2001 by Amir Khan Production and directed by Ashuthosh Gouvarikar, the movie was a huge success which earned gross revenue of 389 million. The movie tells the story of a poor village in central India at the time of British Raj. The villagers were suffering from drought and were facing a very high tax that was imposed on them by the British government. They get a wager from the General of the province that if the villagers beat the British in a game of cricket their taxes for three years will be cancelled. The villagers lead by Bhuvan, the protagonist played by Amir Khan, learn the game and fight the British for saving their villages and ultimately succeed in their effort. The movie with a very strong screen play, beautiful picturisation and a tremendous performance by the actors won the hearts of millions of viewers’ world wide.
